Using the Grid Method for Drawing - And A couple of the Challenges You Need to Be Familiar With
I am going to presume that you are aware of exactly what the grid method consists of for anybody who is looking at this It consists of placing a grid on top of your reference material and in addition putting a grid on top of your paper. And then, you simply replicate exactly what you observe in every box in your reference photo to the equivalent box in your drawing paper.
Using the grid method unquestionably makes it much simpler to keep all things in proportion. Having said that, the grid method really does come with a couple of issues. Among the difficulties with the grid method is that it's rather time-consuming and also laborious. To make a grid on top of your reference photo and also put a grid on top of your drawing paper each time you would like to do a drawing uses a considerable amount of time and isn't a lot of fun.
If you're putting a grid on top of the drawing paper, you'll in addition need to get rid of all of the grid lines to end up with a decent looking, completed drawing. Getting rid of the grid lines will take time but it will cause a number of challenges on top of that. One particular concern is that regardless of how much you try, you might not be able to completely get rid of the grid lines by simply erasing them. There might be some graphite and a bit of a line that remains.
An additional situation is that after you erase your grid lines, even if you're able to eliminate all of the graphite, in some cases the portion of the paper that you erased will no longer be able to hold graphite as effectively as the area of the paper you didn't erase. This leaves behind what I refer to as a ghost grid once you start shading your drawing. Once you begin shading your drawing, you may at times be able to find lines in places you erased your grid lines. Since the area of the paper you erased won't hold graphite the way the area of the paper you did not erase, it can make it tough to achieve a nice consistent tone because the lines you erased may be somewhat lighter than the shading close to these lines.
The great news is that I have developed a variety of solutions to each of the different issues that the grid method might present. I haven't got time to talk about all of these techniques at this time however I have produced a video in which I demonstrate everything in depth. My procedures make it possible for you to obtain each of the advantages of using the grid method without the many complications and aggravation.
